Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

Wick (part 2), 100th Harbour Master

100th Harbour Master

September 1, 2020
1st Sep 2020 Malcolm Bremner of Wick was my 100th Harbour Master and I could not have had a better HM with whom to celebrate this milestone in my challenge. Without wishing to big him up too much (Malcolm has a very good sense of humour!) I do want to tell him what an amazingly welcoming harbour he has created in his 28 years of being a Harbour Master.

When appointed, Malcolm was the youngest HM in Great Britain. Born and bred in Wick he has a lot of energy - or should I say "puff" for he is a trombone teacher and a choirmaster! Like so many HMs his early years were spent fishing but unusually he also worked inside Dounreay Nuclear Power station where I think he picked up a bit of atomic energy which has driven him ever since!

In his first year of being HM he disposed of 30 artic lorries worth of scrap metal from the harbour and set about a massive clear up operation. Then he, with the Commissioners, had a vision of creating a marina in the inner harbour which now enjoys 500 visiting yachts in a normal year. Not only has he transformed a dreary dock into a flourishing and attractive harbour-side community, he has helped secure the future of the harbour by making it the support centre of the one of the largest offshore wind farms in the UK - Beatrice. I write more about these changes in my next post on Wick.

Wick Harbour has a long association with Denmark, and very unusually Malcolm is an honorary Vice Consul to Denmark and able to issue Danish passports. Hence the large red sign outside his office!

Malcolm himself is one of those people who is so energetic and enthusiastic, I can only guess he is an inspiration to everyone he works with in this far flung corner of Scotland. The team in the harbour office were so friendly and I want to thank them all for making my 100th Harbour so memorable and for looking after me and Good Dog in such style!

Malcolm I will be back to see you - but only if you say nice things about me to my crew next time!!
