Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

Uig, Isle of Skye

Uig is not your normal harbour and Sergejs Vozmitels is not your normal HM. As HM of The Isle of Skye he is responsible for the four Calmac ferry routes (to Uist, Harris, Raasay & Mallaig) the harbours of Uig, Portree and Sconser plus 18 slipways on Skye.

Born in Latvia he had a full career at sea ending up skippering North Sea supply vessels using "Dynamic Positioning" anchors where GPS controlling "thrusters" could accurately hold the vessel to within 1 metre of a fixed position. In 2007 he changed to being a HM. Based at Uig, where in a normal summer five ferries a day depart to the Outer Hebrides. Controversy surrounds the plans to introduce new Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) ferries at Uig - see this BBC post: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-51114275 The harbour is (was ?) due a huge improvement project in 2020 to store the LNG and the new ferries, but I really can't see this happening now.

For Good Dog, Uig will be remembered for different reasons, getting a plastic bag stuck in our very own "thruster" at our bow, and thankfully crew member Jack braving the cold water to cut it safely out. My crew also asked me what an "ensign" was and why we fly a blue one (Royal Armoured Corps Yacht Club) - I enclose a photo explaining it! The day before we had anchored below the dramatic MacLeod Tables near Dunvegan Castle where we sent the crew @jackturnerer up the mast to mend a couple of things....see the video.
