Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

Not many Harbour Masters have had a previous career in Nuclear Medicine. (No, I had not heard of it either - the injecting of radio-active material into your blood stream to identify certain diseases.) So with Nigel O'Hare at the helm, Stranraer Harbour is in very safe hands.

Many people will have heard of, or been to Stranraer, famous for the ferry to Ireland for over 150 years. Tucked in at the southern end of Loch Ryan it is well protected from the Atlantic westerlies. Not so well protected from Robert the Bruce however, who attacked Edward 1st forces in Stranraer in 1307. Yes - the same Edward 1st who built all those castles in North Wales - he must have been an amazing warrior king! The loch is also famous for Native Oysters - one of the few places in Scotland. We chatted to the owner of the Oyster company who was mending his boat. Unlike cultivated Oysters - these ones are only available when there is an R in the month - and all of them are sent to London at a premium price.

In 2011 Stena moved the main ferry operation half way up the Loch, leaving Stranraer a much quieter place. However Ayrshire Council has developed a very attractive marina which Nigel and his colleague Owen manage. Thank you for showing us around.
