Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

The Pilot Book simply said - "The author has not visited Rhyl and cannot comment" so we did not know what to expect! However we had a really pleasant surprise when Craig Roberts met us on the new visitors' pontoon and welcomed us to his smart harbour. Our sail from Conwy had been past the imposing limestone headland known as Great Orme (Norse for Sea Serpent) and famous (but flat) town of Llandudno. As we sailed East the first of many windfarms came into view.

The harbour is tidal but has an easy and well marked entrance. The whole harbour area was redeveloped in 2013 and includes the striking Pont y Ddraig foot / cycle bridge which raises up like a flying bird to allow boats into the inner harbour. This bridge completed a cycle path which now stretches from Chester to Holyhead.

Craig previously worked on the support vessels for the massive wind farms that we glimpsed as we approached Rhyl, so he has a lot of experience of these waters. Now as HM he is very enthusiastic about welcoming visiting yachtsmen as well as encouraging people to keep their boats at Rhyl. A recent visitor was the BBC presenter Derek Brockaway known as the Walking Weatherman who presented his show with Craig on Welsh coastal paths. We really liked the harbour and hope the pilot book will be updated soon! Thank you Craig.
