Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

Porthcawl

May 23, 2019
This famously photographed harbour (courtesy Daily Telegraph before I get a solicitor's letter!) was beautifully calm the day we visited it.
.
Sean Warrington and his colleague Adrian were kindly waiting on the jetty to welcome Ian and me as we took a "coffee stop" between Cardiff and Swansea. Sean explained to us how the Americans has altered and strengthened the seawall in WW2 using concrete laid in sandbags (see photo). Clearly they did a good job given the pounding the harbour gets in every south westerly storm. His most unexpected job as HM is to help host the 2nd biggest Elvis Presley festival in the world each August with 35,000 fans and impersonators arriving in the town with the harbour being the central venue! .

With Sean's warm welcome to us I am not surprised he has a waiting list of 40 boats wanting to moor in his harbour. The volunteers in the National Coastguard Institute, who occupy all the vacant coastguard huts and to whom we chat on Channel 65 as we sail around, were also super friendly in Porthcawl. It was the equivalent of stopping off at a motorway service station for us! .
Thank you Sean and Adrian.
