Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

Plockton was THE most welcoming harbour. Easy to enter, sheltered moorings, a very user friendly pontoon - in fact the perfect place to do two crew changes.

Long before I arrived, I received friendly messages from Jimmy Fergusson (left in photo), who is the chairman of the Plockton Harbour Community Company, which mangages the bay, moorings and pontoon at Plockton. He, Peter Davies the Deputy Chair (right), Kevin and many others look after the harbour to a very high standard. They kindly got together and bought me a few socially distanced beers in the pub so I have promoted all of them to Harbour Master!

Uniquely, Plockton is the only east facing harbour on west coast mainland Scotland. I will let you think about that! Consequently the village enjoys the most amazing sunrises. Serving both the local prawn fishermen, yachties and the lucky people who live and holiday in Plockton, the committee do HM type jobs - including rescuing a drifting, unattended yacht which was being blown onto the rocks. Unbelievably the yachtie, who had not paid the committee for using the mooring, then tried to sue the committee even though he was at fault!

I met so many nice people in Plockton, none more so than two fishermen James (beard) and Neil who told me all about the creel-caught prawn industry. The huge "langoustine" on James' boat were being transported, live, yes live, to Japan - yes Japan! Kindly he let me have some for our supper - they were nearly the size of a lobster! Amazingly there is no quota on numbers caught, but he told me that to conserve stocks any females with "roe" (known as "berried") are returned.

I said farewell to my "family crew" (photo 9) at Plockton, a big thank you to them!

One of the most rewarding things when visiting a harbour is talking to people who walk past the boat. In Plockton a lovely family nearby baked me a loaf of sour dough bread and before we knew it, we were taking all ten of them on an evening trip around Loch Carron - just magical. Thank you everyone in Plockton - a real highlight on my journey so far! @visitplockton @issytjones @lisambaxter @stellayacht
