Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

Mevagissey

and the Vicar's day off!

April 6, 2019
Matthew Wheeler was at the helm of his fork lift truck when The Vicar of Fowey and I arrived at the HM office. (This sounds like the start of a detective story!)

Consequently we had time to chat to his colleague Chris, Clerk to the Trustees of the Harbour. Meva, as it is known locally, is another trust port with rare charitable status.

Meva's USP is fishing, having been nominated for Fishing Port of the Year 2019! My photo is of the fish stall on the quayside.

After a career in the merchant navy, Matthew has been HM for 4 years. So far his most memorable day has been the morning of 3 March 2018, when The Beast from the East combined with Storm Emma, inflicted £100,000 of damage to Meva's harbour, ripping iron ladders out of concrete walls. Luckily the famous aquarium survived the battering.

Matthew wanted to mention the particular welcome he and his team gives visiting yachtsmen, particularly from Europe. Thank you for your time and good wishes Matthew.

So why The Vicar of Fowey? Well it was Philip de Grey-Warter's day off... and he kindly gave me a lift from Fowey. See the photo of his beautiful church which attracts Sunday congregations of over 100! .
