Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

Fisherrow

November 30, 2022
30 Jun '21 HM 136. Alex Stewart holds a record for being the longest serving Harbour Master I have met so far - a staggering 44 years!

He told me that Fisherrow's nickname is "The harbour on the hill" because at low water there is about a mile of sand between the harbour and the sea. So our passage planning had to be spot on as we had only a few inches of water under the keel as we tied up to the breakwater at precisely "High Water".

Fisherrow is an extremely friendly place and we got chatting to several well wishers including a bright young boy called Zac (photo 7) who came to look at Good Dog with his mum. I overheard him tell her "No Mum, it's not a Swedish boat, it's a Nauticat and they are made in Finland!". Thank you Zac for the £5 for Seafarers' Charity - top man!

Alex himself learnt to sail on a 32ft Morecambe Prawner. When I looked up this type of boat (photo 9) I discovered it is not only very complicated to sail, but also it has a shallow draught - perfect for Fisherrow! (It is very similar to another beautiful boat I know @moonraker_of_fowey )

Thank you to Claire, Nick and the other Gig Rowers from Portobello who rowed out to meet us - embarrassingly I can't find the photo I took of them - but Claire did email me this information about Fisherrow Harbour:

"Fisherrow is an interesting little place - there's evidence of a settlement going back thousands of years due to its mussel beds, with a long history of fishermen and women living and working here, but sadly during the past century there has been a dramatic decline in fishing for a variety of reasons, which gives the area a particular atmosphere."

Thank you Alex for our short and sweet visit to your very friendly, if rather shallow harbour!
