Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

Falmouth

April 13, 2019
Duncan Paul, the Deputy Harbour Master of Falmouth Harbour is an Ex Ship's Master. With 1,200 commercial ship's movements in and out of the world's third largest deep water harbour, it needs someone of his experience to master mind the operations.

Falmouth has a long history stretching back to 1688 when it became an official "Packet Port" for Royal Mail responsible for packets and diplomatic bags being sent all over the world. It is a Trust Port, (I.e. independent of local government) run by elected Commissioners.

With the three separate operations: Falmouth Haven leisure marina (where I moored Good Dog.... thank you Barney), Pilot Services (each pilot boat costing £1 Million) and thirdly its Commercial Operations it is not surprising that Falmouth needs three HMs.

Thank you Duncan for your time and explaining a little about commercial shipping practices to me. As a member of the South West Ports Welfare Comittee - part of the @MerchantNavyWelfare Board , Duncan is well aware of the work that Seafarers UK charity does and which I want to highlight during this journey.

The strong winds (and a damaged sail) have prevented me from continuing west at the moment, so I am seeking shelter up the Percuil River on Toby Ashworth's mooring buoy (thank you again Toby!) waiting for the Easterly winds to calm down.

If you have any questions or requests for this blog please ask me.....I am thinking about doing a face to camera video about life on board next!
