Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

Coverack

April 19, 2019
Jon Carey is a full time fisherman and also the Harbour Master of the tiny tidal fishing harbour of Coverack between Falmouth and The Lizard. He was busy painting his fishing boat when I met him on the beach in the sun. Coverack is a privately owned harbour, which makes the maintenance of the 18th century harbour wall an expensive undertaking.

In the March 2018 easterly storms a 5ft hole was blasted through the wall and required immediate repair. John's biggest challenge is the large number of summer tourists who climb all over his harbour, literally, and often end up in danger.

Like all Cornish villages, everyone was so friendly. Not just Elizabeth who sells pasties from her cottage (pictured with the 1960s Life Boat crew consisting of many of her family) but also Colin and Jo who picked me up hitching.

They told me about a charity they run which is a community dance theatre company, with an "all inclusive" aim of getting mentally handicapped people, particularly Downs Syndrome, to perform on stage. WOW... what a wonderful thing to do. take a look: www.shallal.org.uk.
