Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

Bristol

Yes....that is Good Dog going under the Clifton Suspension Bridge!

As you can see, we had such fun in Bristol. We saw and learnt so much about the harbour thanks to the Deputy Harbour Master Will Stanley, seen with the second Deputy Peter Seed sitting on the lock wall. Their staff (Hi Ben!) were all so friendly.

To enter the city you first have to time your entrance into the river at a precise time just before high tide. A strong current was running up the Bristol channel as we ferry-glided into the narrow River Avon, negotiating the mud banks as we motored under the M5 Avonmouth bridge, cruised up the river and were welcomed by the majestic Clifton suspension bridge. Our son William was waiting to photograph Good Dog - the tiny speck you can see in the river below.

After going through two sets of lock gates, separated by the Cumberland Basin, through two swing bridges (while the road traffic waited), we snaked our way right into the heart of the city past SS Great Britain. We were joined on the visitors' pontoon by William's university friends!
