Harbour Master Sailing Challenge 2019 to 2023 (Ireland still to be written up)

Boscastle

May 19, 2019
Chris Key is a fairly unique harbour master, combining his job as a full time solicitor AND professional commercial fisherman together with his responsibilities as HM. The harbour itself is set well back from the sea, in a steep gorge, and you would find it a challenge to navigate through the tiny zig-zag entrance, which probably explains why the residents of Boscastle feel hidden away from the real world.
.
I was lucky enough to be shown around Boscastle by my friends, Emma and Simon, who introduced me to Chris. Emma is an artist and she gets a lot of her inspiration from this stunning corner of Cornwall ( @emmahaggas.art ). Just watching Chris navigate his fishing boat out, to check his lobster pots in the harbour entrance, was enough to make me thankful Good Dog was safely tucked up in Padstow harbour.
.
Boscastle hit the news headlines in August 2004 when a flash flood nearly destroyed the village. When I asked Chris what was the most unusual thing that had happened to him as HM, that was simple..... coming to work to find a Mercedes car ....upside down... on top of his fishing boat!
.
Visiting the pristine harbour today, with perfect buildings and National Trust standard lawns next to the river, it is hard to believe the devastation that occurred. If you have a chance, do visit the village ..... as I found out in the pub....the locals are super friendly!
