Harbour Master Sailing Challenge March 2019 to September 2023

Tresco

May 4, 2019
Adam O'Neill was not at home the day we visited Tresco..... but like all the HMs I have contacted on my travels he was very supportive of this challenge.

Tresco is difficult to describe, or at least it is difficult to describe how beautiful it is. Basically a privately owned island and with a world famous garden. Tresco Abbey Garden was created in 1834 by Augustus Smith, and has been tended and expanded by the same family ever since. We were lucky enough to meet the very hands on owner. She is is a keen sailor and has already helped me develop this challenge.

The harbour at New Grimsby is opposite the equally beautiful island of Bryher. When there is a very low spring tide, you can walk between the two islands on a sand bar, and several times a year a pop-up festival occurs with live music, games and food stalls. Tides dictate the life of the islanders, something that bureaucrats do not necessarily appreciate.

In the June 2017 General Election, Theresa May completely forgot to check the tide tables, and as HM, Adam was responsible for collecting the ballot box from Bryher at 11pm, and getting it back to the counting office on St Mary's at a very low tide in the middle of the night!

If you enjoy islands, peace and quiet (there are no cars on Tresco) and an amazingly landscaped garden with plants from all over the world..... then visit Tresco. Their slogan sums it up.... "Get lost in paradise!"
